William Jewell Hoover Jr., a devoted elder of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, passed away on February 5, 2026, in Independence, Missouri. Born on September 7, 1946 to William Jewell Hoover Sr. and Ethel Marie (Marshall) Hoover in Kansas City, Kansas, William lived a life rich in service, faith, and connection, leaving behind an indelible mark on all who knew him.
A man of humor and engaging conversation, William was admired for his ability to share his testimony and inspire others. His commitment to his community extended well beyond his church affiliation; he dedicated over 40 years to missionary work, particularly among the Lakota, Blackfoot, and Navajo Nations, where his warmth and openness helped bridge cultures and foster understanding.
William’s military service was notable, as he proudly served in the Army, Navy, and Marines for over 20 years. As a welder and medic during the Vietnam War, he exemplified dedication and resilience, traits that characterized his approach to all facets of life.
In his leisure time, William found joy in the great outdoors. He loved horses, taking walks and hikes, camping, canoeing, and being in nature. These pursuits allowed him to connect deeply with the world around him, forging lasting memories and friendships with fellow veterans and the community at large.
On December 10, 2007, William married Valerie Ulrey in Lamar, Missouri. Their union lasted 18 beautiful years, filled with love and companionship. William is survived by his beloved wife, Valerie Hoover; his children: Michele, Christopher and Jason; step-sons Adam and Jonathon; and a step-daughter, Christy. He also leaves behind a legacy of joy with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward the values he instilled in them. He joins his parents and his grandson, Warren Spillman, in eternal peace.
William's siblings, Patricia, Barbara, Arleta and Jack, remember him fondly, as do many friends and comrades from his years of service and ministry. His genuine love for people shone through in everything he did, marking him as a cherished friend and mentor to many.
As we remember William Jewell Hoover Jr., we celebrate his life—a tapestry woven with laughter, faith, and unwavering service. His spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
