Michael "Mike" Gene Shrout, 84, of Peculiar, Missouri passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026 at Valor-Brown Funeral Services, 30000 Valor Dr., Grain Valley, MO 64029. Visitation will start at 11:00 am, followed by services at 12:00 pm. Burial will follow the services at Valor Park Memorial Gardens in Grain Valley, MO.
Mike was born on September 3, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Elmer Shrout and Valerie Johnston Jersey. While attending Kenwood High School, he met the love of his life - whom he lovingly called his "special angel" - Joan Marie Kelly, at a school dance. They were married on May 11, 1963 in Washington D.C. and together were blessed with four children: Michael, Theresa, Kathleen and Kelli. Though the family traveled often, Mike and Joan eventually returned to the Kansas City area, later moving to Raymore, and finally settling in Peculiar, MO in 1989, where they both resided until their passing.
Mike proudly served his country for 22 years, first in the Navy Reserves and later in the United States Marine Corps, retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, which is the 9th and highest technical enlisted grade in the US Marine Corps. During his military career, he was stationed in Vietnam, Kansas City, Hawaii and Japan. Following his retirement from the Marines, Mike worked as a manager with Associated Wholesale Grocers and later retired from the Internal Revenue Service.
A natural-born leader and devoted provider, Mike will be remembered for his incredible work ethic, love of travel, fondness for animals and the unwavering care he gave his family and friends. A self-taught handyman, there was rarely a challenge he could not fix - or help someone else fix. Mike loved telling stories of adventures with friends, whether fishing, traveling, playing cards or pulling pranks. He touched countless lives and cherished his family deeply. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan and enjoyed classic John Wayne movies. Music was another passion of Mike's, with John Denver and Anne Murray being among his favorite artists. His love of nature turned his acreage into a haven for squirrels, birds, deer and other wildlife. Mike was known for his kindness, storytelling, strong presence and enduring love for those around him.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Shrout and Valerie (Johnston) Jersey; his wife, Joan Marie (Kelly) Shrout; and his son, Michael John Shrout. We would be remiss as to not share his dedication and care for Michael who had Down Syndrome and also his care for Joan who both passed peacefully in the home.
He is survived by his sister, Phyllis (Shrout) Magnant; his three daughters, Theresa Chartier (Mike), Kathleen Borgfield, and Kelli Chappelow (Tony); six grandchildren, Cierra Maiuro (AJ), Jacob Totten, Gage Borgfield, Kaylee Ben-Ami (Jacob), Tommy Chappelow (Samantha) and Matthew Borgfield; and five great-grandchildren, Carrie, Grant, Ryker, Raygen, Jaxson and another on the way this month, along with nieces, nephews and many cousins.
In addition to flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Contributions can be sent to P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142. Your support will help continue Mike's legacy of compassion and make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in need.
As we bid farewell to our beloved Mike, may we carry forward the lessons he taught us through his unwavering love and infectious humor. May his memory be a beacon of light, reminding us to embrace life, cherish our loved ones and spread kindness wherever we go. Rest in eternal peace, dear Mike.
